As many Canadian women are now putting off marriage until a later age (or foregoing it entirely), a huge shift in the housing market is taking place. Where at one time it was quite rare to see a single female home owner, today single Canadian women are dominating the real estate market.
Among some of the better studies undertaken over the last few years was the Canadian Women Home owners Survey. As cited by the study, respondents indicated that their main motivation for buying was that “it was a good investment (71 per cent), that they didn’t want to pay rent any more (61 per cent) and their desire to get into the housing market (54 per cent).”
Of the total number of first time female home buyers, a staggering 82% were single and around half held a University degree. Their motivation for buying? Everything from a sound financial investment, to the desire to have a garden or backyard.
